Writing
Intent
“The most important thing is to read as much as you can, like I did. It will give you an understanding of what makes good writing and it will enlarge your vocabulary."
J.K Rowling
Writing is the gateway to a world of imagination and possibilities: it gives us a voice and allows us to express our thoughts, feelings, and opinions in a safe way. At Great Bradfords Junior School, this is exactly what writing does. Throughout their time with us, we aim to ensure all of our children develop a genuine love of language and the written word, through the use of the schemes ‘Write Stuff’, which follows a repeated pattern of ‘Initiate’, ‘Model’ and ‘Enable’ to support children in creating carefully constructed sentences, and ‘No Nonsense Spelling’ which builds the children’s confidence with spelling patterns.
At Great Bradfords Junior School, our children buzz with excitement as they discuss their next piece of writing with their peers in their class. As they progress through school, the children hone and develop their writing skills by using increasingly more advanced techniques and features. Along the way, they learn the skills to delve deep into their writing and unpick it; highlighting and discussing the individual features and techniques they have used to bring their work to life. Furthermore, our children understand the importance of drafting and pushing outside their comfort zone to achieve a polished final draft. These processes are how we achieve ‘Excellence’ in writing.
Through cross-curricular planning, we are able to develop our children into writers who could become journalists, reporters, poets, authors, teachers, politicians – the opportunities are endless.
